Lesson 29/09/15-Adverts

In the lesson we were split into different groups of 3/4 people, our task was to plan out our advert for which we would be filming on Wednesdays lesson. The members in my group other than me are Alan and Jess.

Overall we are undecided on who will be acting within the advert, I myself have opted for a possible role within the advert, we do not have any props between us for the advert and neither of us have any costumes to use either.

All the groups then had to research a minimum of 3 adverts that could be seen as 'freaky', our group had a finalized decision on which 3 adverts we'd look into with more detail. The adverts we chose to look further into are: 'Little Girl' by Phones4U, 'It's A Special Time' by Little Baby's Ice Cream and 'Baby Doll' by Sony to advertise their PS3.
Little Girl was and advert which sparked up a lot of trouble due to it apparently being 'too scary' for daytime TV as there would be younger viewers watching TV at the time. The majority of complaints were ignored by Phones4U for a while, the advert was eventually replaced by 'The Zombie' which was much more friendly to the younger viewers. This advert is primarily made up of non-diegetic sound, mainly ambience, to emphasise the eerie atmosphere. Diegetic sound is heard near the end of the advert when the girl presses her hands on the window of the car and when the woman in the car reacts to said sound.Link for the advert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2oL_gXECtg

The second advert we looked up was the advert that Sony produced for their PlayStation 3, the advert features a baby 'doll' which was made to seem as alive as it began to look around, blink and even shed tears. During the advert, as the baby shed tears we see a reflection of what seems to be a variety of different video games that can be played on the console. The advert is filled with a variety of non-diegetic sounds.

The third advert we looked at was produced by Little Baby's Ice Cream. The advert features a man covered in ice cream, he proceeds to slowly eat himself with a spoon for the entirety of the advert. The is only one sound in this advert and that is the background music that is used.

Photography Setup

Setup
In today's lesson we have learnt how to setup a redhead light and tripod to use with the camera. We had to bring in an object/prop to take pictures of so that we could edit them while learning how to do so. On the right is an image of the setup with a prop on the background.
This is one of the 2 pictures that I shot with the setup. The image displayed has been unedited. I took a total of 3 pictures of this prop and decided this one was the best as the prop was more centered in this image as compared to the other two which either showed background colours other than white or the prop was not centered. I also preferred this image due to there being more of a white background, I also liked the shadow in this particular picture.

This is the second image that I took with the setup. I also took 3 pictures with this prop and this was the best outcome.

The last two images are my final edits of the two images. I cropped the image of the shoe to make it look neater.

Banner

Here, I produced a simple banner with a black background. I also added an additional image and blended it with the black background. To produce the banner we used the Rectangular Marquee tool. This tool allowed us to create a square which we then changed into a triangle with the Anchor Pen tool.

Three Eerie/Ghostly Images

Within the lesson we produced three ghostly images. For all of our images we downloaded at least two images for each image and combined them into a final Photoshop image.

The first image I produced was of the house and the ethereal man. To create this image I had to use the pen tool to cut out a man, and place him into the image. I changed him into a gray-scale colour and also changed the opacity to make him look ghostly, I also feathered the image of him to give him an eerie outline.

For my second image I produced an image in black and white. For this image I edited in an ethereal owl. The owl contains the only colour within the picture as I gave it red eyes to emphasize the eeriness in the picture. I used an owl as it is a forest scene, also owls are seen as having a intimidating look because of there naturally angry looking faces and there large faces.

For my final image I produced an image of a dragon seen in the distance of a lake/ocean. This is by far my most edited image as I changed the colour of the water to make it look better and I also made the image look mistier than it already was. The dragon was brought into the image by cutting it from an original image (which took a lot of time) and was placed in the background to make it look like it is standing in the distance.

Sub-Advert

For my advert I took PEPSI's bad points and fixated them into one of their many slogans. The original slogan was 'GET REFRESHED', but I edited it to show PEPSI's bad side.

This post shows my drawn-up draft and my final Photoshop piece.

ps: All rights got to Pepsi :)

Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds states than an image is most pleasing when its subjects or regions are composed along imaginary lines which divide the image into thirds — both vertically and horizontally.

Sharingan

An additional image I created outside of lesson using various tools on photoshop,

Cat Thing

The image above was produced by using the pen tool on Photoshop. I learned how to use the pen tool to select areas of an image precisely.

Photoshop

In today's lesson I produced three 'Freaky' Photoshop images by using using multiple tools within the software.

The first tool we used in the lesson is the the clone stamp tool. This tool allows you to basically copy part of the image and paint it somewhere else on said image. This is the first time I have used this tool and i hope I can improve on the use of it to make more freaky images. the first picture I produced with this tool is the picture of the cat with extra orifices.

The second picture I produced is the picture of Robert Downey Jr. with his face applied to his face. I also used the clone stamp tool for this image but I produced a full clone rather than part of the picture.

The third and final picture I produced is the picture of the killer whale that has Robert's face on it. I edited the opacity of Robert's face so that it blended into the whale more.

Also, while producing these pictures we used the transform tool which plays a big part in a lot of Photoshop images.

Lesson review

As part of today’s lesson we produced an advert. We were one of five groups and we had to select three cards which would give the basis of what our advert would be advertising, who the advert would be aimed towards and the kind of format it would be presented in. Our group had to produce an advert for an older businessman (30+) who would be looking through a magazine and would want to buy a digital camera.

We began to come up with ideas and put them onto a piece of paper. We also had to come up with a slogan for our product and a product name.

After we had completed our task, we had to present our ideas to the class. We took turns explaining

what we had done for the advertisement so that we all had a chance to speak.

Personally I think we could have improved on this task by coming up with more ideas for the product as we had a minimal amount, we could improve on our group communication skills and we could have planned what we needed to say about the product as there would be no hesitation when presenting the advert and it would have made presenting the product/advert more efficient. The advert was not designed as well as it could have been due to the lack of ideas we produced as a group. Finally, I felt that the advert was a little too complex for an advert designated for a magazine.

Three Dark Pictures

Although this untitled picture by Sue Demetriou is not to eerie, it is still a form of dark photography, nature to be exact. The picture itself represents the ferocity of wolves due to the timing as the wolf is shown bearing all of its teeth. Most of the picture is in a grayscale format to emphasise the darkness of the picture, although the eyes of the wolf are left as their original colour to make the wolf seem more intimidating.

This picture in particular has an unidentified photographer and it is left untitled. One thing in particular that makes this picture ‘dark’ is the person behind the glass wearing a gas mask. You cannot see the eyes of the person who is wearing the gas mask, which almost makes them seem hollow. Gas masks are also generally associated with the first and second world war, which sparks a sense of ominousness. The rain dropping down the window represents a form negativity as rain is associated with being miserable.

The final picture I have decided to review also remains untitled. The photographer has edited this picture to make it seem as if the only thing that is completely visible is the eye of the individual in the picture. In my opinion, I feel like the eye colour (Amber) emphasizes the darkness in this picture because of how much colour it has and how bright it is. The picture itself is quite simplistic as well as the editing but it still delivers an eerie feeling to the viewer of the picture.
